Due to disruption caused by events prior to the Grand Depart in Leeds, the Gallery will be closing early at 3pm on Thursday 3 July.

We will be open as usual for the remainder of the Grand Depart festivities in the city on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 July from 10am - 5pm daily.

Sorry for any inconvenience this early closure on Thursday may cause.

We're getting into the spirit of the Grand Départ and on the day it passes through Leeds, what better way to spend an afternoon than to make something to remember it by.

Make your way up to The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery for a bit of peace away from the crowds and emerge once more with your own souvenirs to commemorate this momentous day.

Whether it's a postcard, a flag, a plate, cup or badge, there will be something for everyone to make as a memento of the day that the Tour de France departed from Leeds, and passed by our very own windows!

This is a free event, open to all ages. Just drop in.

It's all about Yorkshire this summer, so why not take part in this creative writing workshop and put down onto paper your thoughts on 'Gods own County!'

Based on the Gallery's current My Yorkshire display and material from the University Library's Special Collections, this creative writing workshop will celebrate the everyday life, history and diversity of the county.

The workshop will consider texts written by local writers both old and new, alongside the works on display within the Gallery to help inspire some new Yorkshire-themed writing!

Join creative writing practitioner Suzannah Evans for this relaxing and creatively stimulating workshop, open to all, whether you are an artist interested in writing, or a writer with a love of art. All levels of experience are welcome. Suitable for all ages over 16.

This is a free workshop but places are limited so please book in advance.

The Gallery is delighted to announce that it has been able to reschedule this event! Join artist Ann Seabourne in the Gallery to hear more about her work and inspiration....with tea and cake to follow

Ann Seabourne's work will be on display in the Gallery throughout June and July 2014 as part of the Special Display: Diverse Encounters which features paintings by Ann and music by her nephew Peter Seabourne.

Take part in this informal discussion about Ann's practice and discover more about the context behind the current display whilst we serve up tea, scones and more treats to all!

What better way to meet an artist and to really get to know and understand their work than with afternoon tea thrown in too?!


Find out more about the intriguing display of works and music which form this unique, interrelated exhibition here. Details of a recital by Peter Seabourne which will be held on Sunday 15th June can be found online also. A CD of these compositions is available for purchase from the Gallery.

Ebru Paper Marbling Workshop

Marbling: The transformation of colour pigments and oil splashed into a tray of water into something truly beautiful printed onto paper... Come and try it for yourself!

Ebru is a traditional Islamic and Turkish painting art also known as marbling.It is an ancient craft that has captivated Turkish sultanas and French peasants, Japanese emperors and Victorian bookbinders over the centuries.

Take part in this popular workshop led by artist and tutor Bade Kafadar as we offer you the chance to learn about the history and the techniques of this ancient craft and to create your own beautiful patterns and papers.

Suitable for ages 6+

This is a free workshop but please remember that spaces are limited so booking is a must! A refundable booking fee of £5 will be taken upon booking. This will be returned to you on arrival at the workshop. Cancellations within 48 hours of the event will not be eligible for a refund.
