Workbooks and online tutorials

These workbooks and tutorials are designed to help you to go through the basics of using a particular subject resource. Those listed below are for resources useful to staff and students in the Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences.

PsycINFO is essential for references to motor skills, motivation, teams and groups, and sport psychology.

SportDiscus is the world's leading database in sport, health, fitness and sports medicine. providing some access to fulltext and bibliographic references in such areas as sport medicine, physical education, coaching and training, arts and history, corporate wellness, engineering and health and safety. SportDiscus has over 700,000 qualified references from thousands of international periodicals, books, e-journals, conference proceedings, theses, dissertations, and websites as well as has direct links to fulltext articles. SportDiscus is provided on EBSCOhost.

Medline:  there are two workbooks and two online tutorials to work through; this database covers articles on human studies more thoroughly than Web of Science.

These workbooks are designed to be printed out: 

SciFinder Scholar workbook (PDF) - an introduction to using the search features of the Chemical Abstracts database; an important source for exercise and physiological chemistry.

Introduction to Web of Science workbook (PDF) - teach yourself how to use the Science Citation Index - Thomson ISI's major science and medicine database, within Web of Knowledge (WoK).

How to Search the Web workbook (PDF) - teach yourself how to search the Web; Google Scholar, gateways and more.

Introduction to the Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management databases (CSA) workbook (PDF) - teach yourself how to use this multidisciplinary database with strengths in environmental science; with some coverage of biomechanics and materials.

Guides


General guides on study skills and various general resources are available from the Skills@Library  website and guides to specific databases are found by clicking on the help information in the record for the database in the Library Catalogue.

Training sessions

Sessions for Sport & Exercise students are integrated into the curriculum.

Skills@Library provides workshops on various topics including seaeching for information, web resources, referencing and EndNote for staff and students.

Further assistance


Training sessions or lectures and demonstrations can be arranged for groups of students, or staff by contacting the Faculty Team Librarian for Biological Sciences.
