Electronic copying (scanning)

May I scan this article or part of this book to include in it in the VLE?

The University has a CLA (Copyright Licensing Agency) Photocopying and Scanning Licence which allows designated persons to scan material published within the UK (with the exception of material published by Penguin) and make it available to staff and students. Details of each item must be centrally recorded.

This licence only covers the scanning of material from books and journals covered by the CLA Licence, and includes the scanning of graphical images (whether the image is printed on a whole page or is embedded on a page also containing text).

May I copy this article or part of this book on to a CD-ROM?

Yes, the CLA Photocopying and Scanning Licence allows material published within the UK (with the exception of material published by Penguin) to be copied to a CD-ROM, provided that one copy only is delivered only to the enrolled students on the course of study for which it is prepared.

For material published outside of the UK, you must ask the permission of the rights-owner(s) first.

What are the rules when copying to CD or DVD, or when adding audio or video files to the VLE?

You must not copy material to CD or DVD unless:

  • it is your own work and therefore your own copyright
  • or you have written permission from the rights-holder
  • or it is covered by a licence held by the University
  • or you have made sure that the material is out of copyright

This applies to music and video files downloaded from the internet, commercial video and DVD recordings, TV and radio broadcasts, sound recordings on any format (LP, cassette, CD, etc.), interview tapes and spoken word recordings.
