Information for NHS employees
Who can join Leeds University Library?
- Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) staff including dental nursing students and dental nurses working at the Leeds Dental Institute
- Leeds Primary Care Trust (PCT)/NHS Leeds staff
- Dentists and doctors in training (PRHO/SHO/FY1/FY2/SpRs) who come under the auspices of the Yorkshire Deanery
- Yorkshire Deanery staff
- NHS staff with an honorary contract with Leeds University
- Dental Nurses who are studying at the Leeds Dental Institute
How to register for membership
You can register at any Library reception desk during staffed opening hours.
LTHT staff
- ID required: LTHT staff ID or provide a letter of introduction from Paul Twiddy, Library & Information Services Manager, LTHT
Leeds PCT staff
- ID required: a letter/email of introduction from Helen Thompson, Librarian, Leeds PCT or Rebecca Vanaanen , Knowledge & Resource Specialist, Public Health Resource Centre plus Trust ID or other ID with photo.
Doctors (PRHO/SHO/FY1/FY2/SpRs) and NHS dentists employed by any NHS Trust in Yorkshire & the Humber and who are also in training via the Yorkshire Deanery
- ID required: a staff ID from a Trust in the Yorkshire & Humber region and you must tick the Yorkshire Deanery box on registration form to declare that you are receiving training through the Yorkshire Deanery.
Yorkshire Deanery staff
- ID required: a Yorkshire Deanery ID badge or a letter from Kim Montacute, Knowledge Services Strategy Manager, NHS Yorkshire & the Humber.
Dental Nursing students
- ID required: LDI supplies a list of eligible students to the library. Students must show ID badge provided by LDI
NHS staff with honorary contracts
ID required: Leeds University staff ID or a letter or contract from the appropriate University School confirming their honorary status
Membership must be renewed annually and will expire on July 31st each year. NHS employees who are on contracts of less than six months will given reading only (not borrowing) membership.
NHS staff with University Honorary contracts can access electronic journals but will require a University computer username and password from the University's Information Systems Services (ISS).
To apply for a username and password, request an `Application for a Computer Username' from the ISS helpdesk (http://iss.leeds.ac.uk/info/289/help_desk) or Andy Pellow, IT Manager, Faculty of Medicine and Health Dean's Office, Worsley Building a.j.h.pellow@leeds.ac.uk or Gareth Frith, TEL Manager, School of Medicine, 7.09 Worsley Building g.s.frith@leeds.ac.uk
Return the form to Andy Pellow or Gareth Frith including full name, contact information and a copy of a letter or contract from the appropriate University School confirming your honorary status.
Membership rights
Membership entitles NHS staff to:
- access all the University Library sites
- borrow books and journals
- access electronic journals within the Library where licensing agreements permit
- use Library PCs to access NHS Evidence Health Information Resources (NHS clinical databases, full text journals)
- print from selected Library PCs
- attend relevant Information Literacy training
- use the enquiry service
- request inter-site loans from off-campus libraries
- use Library photocopying facilities
- document supply (LTHT staff and honorary staff only)
In addition, staff with Honorary University appointments are entitled to
- off-campus access (via ISS login) to the Library's electronic resources
- use of ISS clusters, including printing (ISS registration required)
Other health staff
NHS or private sector health staff currently not eligible for free membership may be able to join as a graduate or join under other terms.NHS library services
NHS staff also have access to a network of NHS libraries and to electronic resources.

NHS staff can also access electronic databases (Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library etc) and full text e-journals & e-books through NHS Evidence Health Information Resources. Follow the instructions on the NH S Evidence homepage to register for an Athens password.
