Working with apps

An app (short for "application") is a piece of software specifically designed to run on smartphones and other mobile devices. There are hundreds of apps to help you with different areas of your learning and study.

Some advice on working with apps and mobile devices in your learning:

Back up your device regularly

This will help you to avoid losing data. If you are using an Apple device, you should also sync with iTunes regularly and be wary of syncing with multiple computers as you risk overwriting your data.

Use apps that save your data online (rather than on your device)

This minimises the danger of losing data, and often makes it possible to sync content with other versions of the app/service. For example, many bookmarking apps will also have a browser add-on that will sync across all your devices.

Be consistent with the apps you use for specific purposes

Find an app you like and stick with it, otherwise you are in danger of spreading your data over multiple apps. For example, don't use two apps for saving your references, as having everything in one place makes it easier to find and access at a later date.
