Description

Papers of John Angus MacKinnon relating to civic duties MS609-611. Speeches, press-cuttings, photographs and other papers on local affairs, mainly relating to John Angus MacKinnon's mayoralty of Normanton in 1978-1979; prayers for civic occassions and papers relating to MacKinnon's higher education at the University of Glasgow, and to teaching history, along with various letters to him, ca.1930-ca.1956.

Biography or history

John A. MacKinnon, a Labour councillor for many years, was first elected to the former Normanton Urban District in 1947, then represented Normanton on Wakefield Metropolitan District Council. He was Founder President of Normanton Civic Society and Mayor of Normanton from 1978 to 1979. In 1977 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in recognition of his historical research. He died in 1981.
