Description
The Department of Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies has deposited its collection of Middle Eastern and Asian manuscripts in Special Collections. There are over 370 manuscripts in primarily in Arabic, but also in Persian, Urdu, Turkish and other languages. The subjects covered include language, literature, history, law and religion.
All of the items are listed in print catalogues which are downloadable from this record. A few digital records for Arabic manuscripts are available as a result of a recent cataloguing project. These are attached to this record in a separate series. The manuscripts are primarily legal documents.
The downloadable print catalogues were created by John Macdonald, M. J. L. Young and A. H. Muhiuddin. Volumes 1-8 cover the Arabic manuscripts numbers 1-371. Volume 8 also covers the Turkish manuscripts numbers 1-7. Volume 9 covers the Persian manuscripts 1-50.
Volume 12 covers Urdu manuscripts numbers 1-9, Malay manuscript number 1, Turkish manuscript number 8.
Volumes 10 and 11 were not produced. Paper copies of the catalogues are available in the Research Centre.
