Comprises: (1) Correspondence from Scott to the following persons: (i) John Carne, 1824-1826, 2 letters and transcripts; (ii) Rev. Geo. Crabbe, [1812], 1 letter and transcript; (iii) His publishers James Ballantyne and John Murray, 1822-1830, 3 letters and transcripts; (iv) The Lord Provost of Glasgow, 1819, 2 letters and transcripts; (v) John Richardson, 1819, 4 letters and transcripts; (vi) Robert Southey, ca. 1807-1815, 3 letters and transcripts, together with another letter of 2 May 1817; (vii) Matthew Weld Hartstonge, 1811-1824, 3 letters and transcripts; (viii) John Wilson Croker, 1810-1831, 8 letters and transcripts; (ix) Sir Francis Freeling, 1828-1830, 3 letters and transcripts; (x) Sir William Knighton, ca. 1825, 1 letter and transcript; (xi) Colin Mackenzie, 1821-1828, 6 letters and transcripts; (xii) Maria Edgeworth, 1 letter, 17 February 1815; (xiii) Various other correspondents, including Robert Kerr, the Marchioness of Huntly, Mrs Laidlaw, James Scott Walker, and Thomas
Colley Grattan, 1814-1830, 23 letters, mostly with transcripts, together with a published engraving of Scott in his study; (2) Autograph letters of Sir Walter Scott, Sir David Wilkie, and Dr Adam Ferguson relative to Wilkie's picture of Sir Walter Scott and Family, 1827, 5 letters, followed by copies of the portraits of persons represented in the picture; (3) Melville papers: a collection of letters to Viscount Melville, including an autograph letter from Sir Walter Scott, dated 30th May, 1808, a letter from Thomas Campbell dated 22nd July, 1834, a letter from J.G. Lockhart, dated January 19th, 1836, and four letters from William Adam, 1835-1836, relating to the erection of a monument to Sir Walter Scott in Edinburgh. At the beginning of this volume there is a cutting of a miniature model of the monument, an engraving of the monument, and a letter dated 18 July, [19]29 from E.S. Haldane to Mr Symington (Lord Brotherton's Librarian) concerning the acquisition of the Melville volume by Lord
Brotherton; (4) Manuscript portion (1 quarto leaf) of his last and unpublished novel 'The siege of Malta', 1832.



11 of the vols are finely bound in red with leather spines embossed with gilt lettering and with marbling on all inside covers and endpapers. The other 3 vols are bound in dark green leather with gilt lettering respectively as follows: (1) AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIR WALTER SCOTT. 1814-1830; (2) WILKIE'S PICTURE OF SCOTT AND HIS FAMILY: MSS; (3) SIR WALTER SCOTT'S MONUMENT EDINBURGH. MELVILLE PAPERS. The autograph letters from most of these vols have been removed, conserved, and placed in envelopes within archive boxes separate from their original vols, which now mainly contain only transcriptions
