Comprises the following items: (1) Carbon typescript with autograph manuscript title-page of Volume 1 of 'The Pistol Troop magazine', compiled by Waugh when a child, 1912; (2) Mimeographed typescript of a school magazine 'The cynic', vol.1, nos. 1-5, 21 January - September 1916, produced at Heath Mount School and joint-edited by Waugh; (3) Autograph manuscript of 'Vile bodies', by Waugh, probably to be dated ca. June-September 1929; (4) Autograph letter from Waugh to Edwin A. Chapman-Andrews [June 1931], held with a copy of Waugh's book 'Remote people'; (5) Autograph typed letter from Waugh to Edwin A. Chapman-Andrews, 5 November [1935], held with a copy of Waugh's book 'Waugh in Abyssinia'; (6) Typed letter from Arnold Goodman on Waugh's behalf and signed by Waugh to A.S. Bell, 13 July 1993, held with a copy of Waugh's book 'Decline and fall'; (7) Typed letter from Graham Greene to Jeffrey Young, 1 August 1989, held with a copy of Waugh's book 'Brideshead revisited'; (8) Autograph letter
from Waugh to 'Dear Sirs', his American publishers, 15 December 1945; (9) Autograph postcard from Waugh to Diana, Lady Abdy, [2 March 1948]; (10) Four autograph letters from Waugh to Stanley Salmen, 23 January 1952 - 31 December 1954; (11) Eleven autograph letters from Waugh to Edward Bradford, 4 September 1955 - 21 July 1961; (12) Autograph letter from Waugh to Edwin Chapman-Andrews, undated [probably 1956]; (13) Autograph postcard from Waugh to John Sparrow, June 1962; (14) Autograph letter from Waugh to Viola Lyel, 18 Jan 1949, held with a copy of Waugh's book 'Edmund Campion', which bears a presentation inscription to Miss Lyel following her reception into the Roman Catholic Church.


Item (1) is bound in red morocco which bears the gilt lettering 'The Pistol Troop Magazine. Edited by Evelyn Waugh 1912' and a crowned armorial shield on the front cover, and the volume is held in a custom-made box covered in blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine 'The/ Pistol/ Troop/ Magazine/ edited/ by/ Evelyn/ Waugh'; (2) is bound in the original brown paper wrappers, each issue having a typed title slip pasted on the front, and the set of volumes is held in a custom-made box covered in blue cloth and bearing on the spine the gilt lettering 'Evelyn/ Waugh/ The/ Cynic'; (3) is bound in dark red morocco with gilt tooling and lettering on the spine, and is held in a large custom-made box covered in blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine 'Evelyn Waugh/ Vile bodies/ Original/ Manuscript'; (4) is held in 'Remote people', by Waugh, 1931; (5) is held in 'Waugh in Abyssinia', by Waugh, 1936; (6) is held within a custom-made box covered in blue cloth bearing on its spine the gilt
lettering 'Evelyn/ Waugh/ Decline/ and/ Fall', 1937; (7) is held within a custom-made box covered in blue cloth with gilt tooling and the lettering on the spine 'Brideshead/ Revisited/ Evelyn/ Waugh/ 1945'; (8), (10), and (11) are all held in paper folders inside a custom-made box covered in blue cloth and bearing on the spine the gilt lettering 'Letters/ of/ Evelyn/ Waugh'; (9) is held in a separate transparent plastic envelope; (12) is held separately in a grey archival enclosure; (13) is held separately in a transparent plastic envelope; (14) is held with 'Edmund Campion', by Waugh, 2nd edn, 1947.
