Researchers both internal and external to the University are welcome to use our resources. See visitor information for details of our procedures and opening hours.
Special Collections facilitates individual and group study. See study and teaching spaces for more information.
There are several ways to find information about our holdings:
- Our Catalogue gives descriptions of printed book, manuscript and archive collections. This is most useful if you are looking for a particular item.
Help using the Catalogue
- If you want to browse material around a topic, our Subject strengths information and specialist catalogues will be a good starting point for your research
- Or search our collections guide, a selected A-Z of printed book and archival holdings with more detailed catalogue and subject links.
Find information about our holdings outside of the University by searching external archives.
Other archives on campus could also complement your research.
If you cannot find information you want with the above finding aids, Special Collections staff have expert knowledge to ensure all search options have been exhausted.

The National Archives have produced a number of useful guides for researchers, including these on reading old documents.
