Signed and dated lower right: A.Thornton '98. Attached to the reverse of the canvas is a page from a letter to Sir Michael from Sir F Hyett, dated 16 December 1922. It reads in part: I think it may perhaps interest you to / have the enclosed as it represents the front view / of a house of the back of which I am told you / have a fine picture by my friend Thornton. / It may puzzle you a little to fit the two / together. Alongside this letter is pasted the front of a Christmas greeting card, reproducing a woodcut showing the front view of Painswick House, inscribed below: from F.A.Hyett.
