Key databases for Civil Engineering

If you need to find journal articles about a subject that you are researching or studying, it is important to search journal databases. Type your topic into the search screen of the database to obtain a list of relevant journal articles, and remember to look at help screens or Library guides to make the most of what is on offer.

Search for journal articles in architecture and design, archaeology, city planning, interior design, and historic preservation. The database is updated weekly.

Business Source Premier

Subjects include business, management, economics, finance, accounting, international business and marketing.Search for journal articles, trade publications, country reports, industry information, company news and conference proceedings. Use the advanced search to narrow down the results, for example to academic journals.

Construction Information Service

An excellent source for construction industry information and legislation, covering all aspects of the building, engineering, design and construction process. Includes the full text of LANTAC/LABC building regulation approvals, TRL reports, BRE, CIRIA and HSE/COSHH publications, Architects Journal, New Civil Engineer, Construction News and news-feed services.

Engineering Village

Subjects covered include engineering geology, environmental science, nanotechnology, geophysics, petroleum engineering and physics. This is the biggest and broadest engineering and computing database in the world. Search for journal articles, technical reports and conference proceedings. Includes the research databases Compendex and Inspec and the book collection Referex. It is better to de-select Referex if you are looking specifically for articles, as it improves the search.

ESDU

Search for validated engineering design data, methods and software, source code, equations and examples. The ESDU design guides are organised into 23 series, each covering a specific subject area in six engineering industries: Aerospace, Aerostructure, Construction, Marine, Power generation, and Rail transport. The database is updated four times a year.

Institution of Civil Engineers virtual library

A full-text database containing all the peer-reviewed papers produced since its first meeting in 1836, including the transactions, proceedings, minutes and journal.

Proquest: Science and Technology

This collection of databases allows you to search for journal articles and conference proceedings in a wide range of science and technology subjects including biological sciences, environmental sciences, geology, water resources and engineering.

Scopus

Scopus is a large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature from more than 18,500 journals and quality web sources, with smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research.

Web of Science

Search for journal articles using three databases; Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index. A current awareness service provides citation alerts for newly added journal articles. Each database is updated weekly.
