Key databases for Media and Communication

If you need to find journal articles about a subject that you are researching or studying, it is important to search journal databases. Type your topic into the search screen of the database to obtain a list of relevant journal articles, and remember to look at help screens or Library guides to make the most of what is on offer.

Below is a list of journal databases which are most often used in Media and Communication. You can also see a complete list of databases for Media and Communication available from the Library.

Communication and Mass Media Complete

Provides quality research in areas related to communication and mass media. CMMC incorporates the content of CommSearch and Mass Media Articles Index, along with numerous other journals in communication, mass media, and other closely related fields of study, to create a research and reference resource of unprecedented scope and depth. It offers indexing and abstracts for more than 570 journals, and selected (priority) coverage of nearly 200 more, for a combined coverage of more than 770 titles. It includes full text for over 450 journals. Many major journals have indexing, abstracts, PDFs and searchable cited references from their first issues to the present (dating as far back as 1915). CMMC contains a sophisticated Communication Thesaurus and comprehensive reference browsing (ie searchable cited references for peer-reviewed journals covered as core). In addition, CMMC features over 5,400 author profiles, providing biographical data and bibliographic information, and covering the most prolific, most cited, and most frequently searched for authors in the database.

Nexis

An excellent source of news information, including international newspapers, trade publications and company information. All articles are available in full text. It is easy to use but remember to narrow down your search by limiting the dates or by choosing a specific set of newspapers. For example you can choose to search across all English language newspapers, or just UK national newspapers. Updated daily.

Web of Science

Search for journal articles using three databases; Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index. A current awareness service provides citation alerts for newly added journal articles. Each database is updated weekly.
