Key databases for Mechanical Engineering

If you need to find journal articles about a subject that you are researching or studying, it is important to search journal databases. Type your topic into the search screen of the database to obtain a list of relevant journal articles, and remember to look at help screens or Library guides to make the most of what is on offer.

Below is a list of journal databases which are most often used in Mechanical Engineering. You can also see a complete list of databases for Mechanical Engineering available from the Library.

Engineering Village

Subjects covered include engineering geology, environmental science, nanotechnology, geophysics, petroleum engineering and physics. This is the biggest and broadest engineering and computing database in the world. Search for journal articles, technical reports and conference proceedings. Includes the research databases Compendex and Inspec and the book collection Referex. It is better to de-select Referex if you are looking specifically for articles, as it improves the search.

ESDU

Search for validated engineering design data, methods and software, source code, equations and examples. The ESDU design guides are organised into 23 series, each covering a specific subject area in six engineering industries: Aerospace, Aerostructure, Construction, Marine, Power generation, and Rail transport. The database is updated four times a year.

Medline

Search for journal articles and other reference types in medicine, dentistry and nursing, including biomedicine, medicine, nursing, dentistry, allied health, pre-clinical sciences. This includes material from across the biological and environmental sciences, psychology, and chemistry. The database is updated frequently and can be searched back to 1950. A current awareness service provides alerts for newly added content.

OnePetro

OnePetro is a multi-society library that provides a simple way to search for and access a broad range of technical literature related to the oil and gas exploration and production industry. From one place, you can search documents from many different professional societies, or similar organisations, that serve the oil and gas industry. The following organisations currently have their technical documents available through OnePetro: American Petroleum Institute (API), American Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA), American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), NACE International (corrosion engineers), Petroleum Society of Canada (PETSOC), Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA), The Society of Underwater Technology (SUT), and World Petroleum Council (WPC).
