Northern Opera Group explore 18th century original editions of ‘Alfred’ and discuss how and why they vary so much, and what this means when performing the opera today.

Show description +
As with many operas from the 18th Century, musicologists, conductors and editors must look through several contemporary sources to piece together a full score for performance.

The University of Leeds Library Special Collections is home to three early printed editions of 'Alfred', comprising editions printed in 1740, 1751, and 1757.

Join Dr Bryan White, University of Leeds, and David Ward, Artistic Director of Northern Opera Group, for a look at how opera scores were produced in the 18th century, who were buying (and playing) them, and why these three scores of 'Alfred' differ so much and what this means when performing the opera today.

Northern Opera Group is a registered charity dedicated to creating opportunities for audiences and performers to experience great opera. This event is part of the Left Bank Opera Festival 2017.

This event is free, but booking is required. Book online via the Northern Opera Group box office:
