Make it Social: Creative Nature Diaries with Rebecca Chesney

Make your own nature diary in this creative workshop with artist Rebecca Chesney!

Keeping a diary of the seasons can provide us with important insights into our changing climate whilst connecting us with the natural world.

The word ‘phenology’ means the study of cycles and natural phenomena in nature, especially in relation to climate and plant and animal life.

Phenology diaries are a mindful and creative way to record the seasons, encouraging us to spend time in nature and draw inspiration from its diverse transformations.

In this workshop for beginners and experts alike, artist Rebecca Chesney will show you how to make your own phenology diary, referencing items from the University Art and Special Collections. Please bring along any old diaries or calendars you have and would like to reuse. Other materials and refreshments will be provided. During the workshop we will be going for a walk around the University of Leeds Campus, so please make sure you are wearing appropriate outdoor clothing.

Rebecca Chesney is a visual artist whose work encompasses installation, video, drawing, maps and walks. She is concerned with humans' relationship with the land and our influence and impact on nature and the environment. She has undertaken commissions and residencies for many organisations including Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Bronte Parsonage Museum, TONSPUR (Micro Museum of Sound in Vienna) and a Peak residency in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales.
