Seeing Stars - Artist Panel Discussion

Join guest curator Hondartza Fraga and artists Stella Baraklianou, Mishka Henner and Paul Magee to discuss their work and the themes of Seeing Stars

Seeing Stars explores our long fascination with outer space and the technologies we create to measure, observe, and understand our place in the Universe. This exhibition shines a light on contemporary artists who use and challenge the newest technologies for space imaging in their practice. The artworks in this exhibition bring the human sense of wonder back into sharp focus – blurring the line between fact and fiction. Join exhibition guest curator Hondartza Fraga and artists Stella Baraklianou, Mishka Henner and Paul Magee to discuss their work and the themes of Seeing Stars.

Hondartza Fraga is a Spanish artist based in Leeds. Working in drawing, photography, animation, and video she explores an evolving fascination with places and objects that lie just out of reach, such as outer space. She is a PhD Practice-Led candidate at the School of Design at the University of Leeds with an award from the White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities. Her drawing work is featured in Vitamin D3: Today’s Best in Contemporary Drawing by Phaidon Publishing (2021).

Dr Stella Baraklianou is an artist and lecturer born in Greece and living in Leeds. She utilises photography, installation and reflective materials to explore themes of the reversible and the poetic. She holds a practice-based PhD from Goldsmiths, London (2007) and an MA in Photographic Studies, University of Westminster, London (2002).

Mishka Henner is a visual artist born in Belgium and living in the UK. He often produces books, films, photographic, and sculptural works that reflect on cultural and industrial infrastructures in a process involving extensive documentary research combined with the meticulous reconstruction of imagery from materials sourced online. He holds a Masters degree from Goldsmiths College in London and was awarded the Infinity Award for Art by the International Center of Photography in 2013.

Paul Magee is an artist and academic born in London and living between Poland and the UK. He makes sculptural, kinetic and sound objects, as well as drawings, prints, computer applications, photographs and video. General research interests revolve around science, technology, epistemology and antiquity. Magee holds a PhD from The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL and presently teaches at Uniwersytet Artystyczny im. Magdaleny Abakanowicz in Poznań.

The Seeing Stars exhibition will be available to view before the panel discussion begins, from 10:00 - 17:30 on Friday 1 July, and is open to the public Tuesday-Saturday 10:00 - 17:00 until 30 July 2022.
