Find funding for open access

Funding may be available to cover open access fees if you are:

  • funded by Research Councils UK (RCUK) or the Charity Open Access Fund (COAF)
  • submitting your paper to a publisher with whom the University has an institutional agreement
  • funded by NIHR or Horizon 2020.

Other funders may allow you to claim the cost of article processing charges (APCs). Check funder websites for information.

Apply for RCUK and COAF funding

Open access fees funding

If you are funded by RCUK or COAF you can apply for funding to cover open access fees.

Make an application for RCUK and COAF funding.

If your application is successful, the Library will send you a purchase order number that you can give to the publisher. The publisher will then raise an invoice.

If you are not successful you will be informed and information will be provided about making your output open access through the institutional repository.

Funding restrictions

COAF or RCUK funding cannot be used to pay APCs for articles submitted to non-compliant publishers.

From 1 April 2017, COAF have introduced a set of requirements that publishers must meet. Download the list of COAF-compliant publishers.

COAF funding cannot be used to cover any open access costs associated with commissioned or invited reviews, conference proceedings, editorials, letters or commentaries, and cannot be used to pay other charges associated with publication, such as page and colour charges.

It is your responsibility to make sure any funder requirements are met.

Other publication costs (RCUK)

Funds for publication costs other than APCs, such as page or colour charges, are available for RCUK funded research, but only when paid in conjunction with an APC and while sufficient funds remain.

Institutional agreements

The Library subscribes to a number of institutional memberships that reduce the cost of open access publication for all academic staff and PhD researchers.

When you submit to these publishers, please use your Leeds email address and state your University affiliation so that the discount may be applied.

The Library has institutional memberships with the following publishers:

  • Electrochemical Society: Leeds authors are entitled to unlimited article credits in place of article processing charges.
  • Springer Compact: no open access charges for Leeds corresponding authors when publishing in many Springer journals.
  • Ubiquity Press: 5% discount on APCs when publishing in any Ubiquity journal.

Regardless of funding, all outputs should be recorded in Symplectic.

Funded by Horizon 2020

Publications arising from Horizon 2020 projects should be made open access by either the gold or green route.

Where applicable APCs can be reimbursed during the duration of the project.

Funded by NIHR

If you are funded by NIHR, open access costs should be included in the grant application. In exceptional circumstances, the funder may pay APCs at the point of publication if the grant has been spent.
