Brotherton Library transformation

West Building and reading room

We are improving the flooring in the central reading room and completing the final phase of the West Building refurbishment project, beginning in June.

Based in part on feedback we received requesting more high-quality study spaces, the West Building refurbishment project began in 2019. Since reopening in January, the contemporary study space is already more popular than ever.

This final phase will create a new entrance with clearer signage and social space. New lighting will support the transition between the grandiose round reading room and the contemporary West Building study area. During this period, we will also undertake renovation of the iconic parquet flooring in the Brotherton’s round reading room on level 3, reviving the majestic study area to its former glory.

Over the years, we have carried out a programme of polishing of the bays that circle the reading room lifting and improving the space. It is now the turn of the reading room to receive this treatment.

The reading room is substantial, with a diameter of 160 feet, so this maintenance is no small feat. All furniture in the room will be moved while the floor receives a comprehensive clean, polish and finish.
