Reading lists

Old books on a shelf

We are happy for staff to recommend our collections to students and can advise on the most appropriate way to give access to what can be fragile material.

If you intend to include Special Collections material in a reading list:

  • Let Special Collections staff know when items are being cited. We can then assess the best ways of giving safe access to them.
  • If you are recommending a chapter or article within a work, it may be better to have a digital copy made of it. This will save wear and tear on the item, and make it more easily accessible for students. Contact us if you would like to recommend an item for digitisation.
  • When citing Special Collections material on reading lists, please indicate that it is for reference only and cannot be borrowed. Students may be unaware of this.
  • Self-service photocopying of Special Collections material is not allowed. Advise students to read the copying and publishing pages of our website.
  • If you anticipate many requests to consult a particular Special Collections item on a particular day, please let us know in advance. Advise students to read our visitor information, as it is quite different from other parts of the Library, and tell them that they can book group study sessions.
