Media literacy

Media literacy covers all the ways you receive and respond to messages in digital media, including text, graphics, video, animations, audio, and media such as web sites, simulations and games.

Most of us share and produce messages of our own, and that means we need to understand issues such as audience, accessibility, user design and impact.

It is important to understand why messages are designed in a particular manner, including how types of media can be used on their own and in combination with others to communicate effectively and inclusively. It’s also useful to understand how distinct types of media affect us and how they can be used for learning.

Reflect on your media literacy by asking:

  • Why has a particular media artefact been created and distributed using a particular format, or multiple formats?
  • When creating media content, how do I consider designing to ensure that it’s accessible to a broad audience?
