The shortlisted student ideas
Re-imagining Laidlaw
Haniyyah Asam, a first year undergraduate Law student, proposes an idea that platforms creative student voices through artistic competitions.
We asked Haniyyah to tell us more about her idea.
Hi Haniyyah! We’d love to know more about your submission. Can you tell us about it?
My idea is to create a series of creative competitions that allow students to showcase their skills in new ways. These competitions would cover different areas, such as poetry, photography and art.
Students would get the opportunity to think creatively and express themselves. Participants could include their achievements on their CVs and their work would also be displayed in a digital gallery – making it visible to the wider University community and celebrating creativity beyond just the winners.
That sounds great. Where did this idea come from?
I’ve always been a creative person, enjoying photography, art and writing, but I often found there were few opportunities to explore these interests at school or university.
Many students, whether studying creative subjects or not, have creative skills they enjoy but rarely get the chance to develop or showcase. I want to provide a platform that encourages everyone to express their creativity, overcome creative blocks and gain recognition for their work, giving their creative side the attention it deserves alongside their academic commitments.
I want to provide a platform that encourages everyone to express their creativity.
Why is it important to you to platform the voices of creative students?
This idea is important to me because creativity is easy to neglect while focusing on academics, but it’s a vital part of personal and professional development.
Students should care about it because participating would build confidence, improve communication and collaboration skills and provide tangible achievements.
Beyond personal fulfilment, these creative accomplishments can enhance employability, demonstrating that students are well-rounded, innovative and capable of thinking outside the box – not just academically proficient.
We can tell you’re really passionate about creative endeavours. One last thing – can you tell us which campus library is your favourite and why?
My favourite is Laidlaw because it combines modern design with practicality.
For me Laidlaw isn’t just a place to study, it also serves as a social hub for me and my friends, with nearby cafés and shops that make it convenient and welcoming, encouraging me and my friends to go there and be productive.
I really like how there is a variety of study spaces which mean no matter what mood you are in, there is a place for you. It’s the perfect balance of social and study.
