Fines and loan period changes

We have reviewed our loan periods and fines to see if we can improve access to books. From August 2013 the following changes apply:

Fines changes:

  • Fines are only levied on items returned late which have been requested by another user, or which are on 4 hour or 1 day loan
  • A fine of £2.50 a day applies to items that are returned late and have been requested by another user
  • We have not changed fines for 4 hour and 1 day loan items

Loan period changes:

  • All books, apart from high demand and reference items, are Standard loan
  • 3-day and 7-day loans no longer exist. 4-hour and 1-day loans remain and stay in the high demand collections
  • Standard loan remains unchanged for University staff and students
  • When someone requests an item you have borrowed, you need to return it within three days (unless you fall into one of the categories which allows for a seven day return*). Postal returns will be counted from the postmark date, rather than the date we receive it
  • You have at least seven days with an item, even if another user has requested it
  • When you request an item, it will be kept on the reservations shelf for three days (unless you fall into one of the categories which allows for a seven day wait on the reservations shelf*)
  • Student Reference copies remain for at least one more year, but when we are in a position to integrate them with other copies they will become standard loan
  • External library users (non-University members) will be able to borrow standard loan items for two weeks.

*Categories of borrowers where the seven day return rule applies:

    • Part time students
    • Healthcare, Dentistry and Medicine students
    • Education students
    • Disabled students
    • Research students
    • Lifelong learning
    • External members
    • Staff.
