The Library this Christmas

Opening hours, returning items and study space: changes over the holiday.

With the end of term fast approaching, here are the key things about Library access for Christmas 2019.

Opening hours

All libraries will remain open until Monday 23 December at 5pm. We will reopen on Thursday 2 January at 8am (St James’s will open at 9am).

Items on loan

Please make sure that any recalled books are returned before we close to avoid fines:

  • Check the status of your loans by looking at your Library account through our website, or through the UniLeeds App or Minerva. Minerva will not be available from midday on Friday 13 December to Tuesday 17 December because of scheduled maintenance.
  • We will email your university account if a book you have is recalled and tell you the date it needs to be returned. Any books recalled while we’re closed won't accrue fines until the return date in the email.
  • Books can be returned through the book slot at the Laidlaw Library throughout the vacation. Return books as usual from Thursday 2 January or you can post them to us if you’re not coming back in January.
  • If you have lost a book or have any questions about returning books, get in touch.
  • Any books on loan that are not recalled will automatically renew as normal.

Online resources

Only the physical buildings are closed – you can still access the full range of online resources including:

You may wish to use Desktop Anywhere for more seamless access to online resources, without having to log in every time.

Study spaces

Other libraries may be open for somewhere to study while we’re closed. University libraries may ask you to apply through SCONUL to access their facilities.

Some computer clusters around the University stay open across the festive season. You’ll need an access code to get in to these, which can be found by logging into the IT web portal.

Looking forward to 2020

The Laidlaw Library will be open 24 hours from Monday 13 January and will remain open throughout the exam period. We will share more about exam support from the Library in the New Year.

Phase two of the Brotherton West Building refurbishment will start on Monday 9 December. There will be limited access to the West Building at this time. This means in the New Year, there will be more powered desks and desks with lighting.

Galleries opening hours will be Tuesday to Saturday 10am until 5pm.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at the Library
