Browse the shelves at your leisure

From Tuesday 27 July, you will be able to browse our bookshelves and take items out using the self-issue machines in the Edward Boyle Library, with other libraries to follow.

As part of our programme to safely restore the in-Library features you love, you’ll be able to browse our shelves and borrow books via self-issue machines at the Edward Boyle from Tuesday 27 July. We’ll restore shelf browsing and self-issue at the Health Sciences, Brotherton, and Laidlaw libraries in the following weeks.

You must have a booked study session to browse the shelves, and you will need your University ID to enter the Library. This allows us to carefully manage the number of people in the building at one time

Click and collect will continue

Alongside in-Library browsing, you will still have the option to use click and collect, and we can still post items out for those who are not able to come to campus.

If you request a book for click and collect, but someone checks it out before our staff pick it for you – it'll be immediately recalled for return. This means it'll be returned within seven days and reserved for you.

Read more about click and collect and home delivery on our “what can I borrow” page.

Changes to the one-way system

In order for you to navigate the shelves comfortably, we will no longer be operating a one-way system on library floors. Stairs and entrance doors will remain one-way so you must continue to observe signage in the stairwells and use the appropriate stairs for up or down travel.

Rules for borrowing

Students and staff members can borrow up to 50 items at a time, if you currently have 50 items on loan you will need to return some items before you can check any more out.

We guarantee that you can keep an item for at least 7 days. We'll keep on renewing your due date until someone else requests it or your library account expires. If somebody requests your book you will have seven days to return it.

In-Library Covid-safety considerations

Please consider others around you when browsing and keep a safe distance at all times.

You must continue to wear a face covering at all times when in the Library.

Regularly sanitise your hands – there is hand sanitiser available at cleaning stations in all libraries.

Please continue to take lateral flow tests regularly, either through the University’s coronavirus testing facility or at-home tests available from Cromer Terrace studio. Do not come to the Library if you have recently tested positive or have any symptoms of Covid-19.
