Work from prize-nominated students on display from 2 August-2 October

Art from four of the best young artists at the University of Leeds is going on display.

Friends of University Art and Music (FUAM) hosts an annual award open to final year students in Design and Fine Art.

The finalists for 2016 from the School of Design are Zoe James and Francesca Ivaldi, and from the School of Art they are Emii Alrai and India Pearce.

Zoe James' work, pictured, experiments with "the boundaries between painting and photography." She says:

"Through repetition of gestures, complex abstract patterns emerge with an aesthetic similar to a Rorschach test.

The observed forms are dependent on the viewer's imagination - whilst some witness grotesque organs fused together, others might see interwoven butterfly wings."

Work from each of the finalists is on display in the Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery from 2 August to 2 October.

A panel of expert judges selected the nominees:

  • Bryony Bond is the Creative Director of The Tetley
  • Derek Horton is the Curator and co-director of &Model
  • Professor Frank Finlay is the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Leeds
The winner will be decided in September. They will receive a cash prize to help them begin their artistic career.
