Publishers will be affected by the changes

The Wellcome Trust has published a set of requirements for open access publications, due to come into force 1 April 2017.

Publishers must meet new requirements in order to receive article processing charges from the Wellcome Trust.

Under the new guidelines, publishers must upload articles to PubMed Central (PMC) and update them if they are corrected or retracted. Publications must have Creative Commons Attribution Licences (CC BY) and reimbursement policies for Article Processing Charges will be offered.

The new rules for publishers are supported by JISC, SCONUL, UKCoRR, and the RLUK.

Publishers who do not sign up to the requirements will no longer be eligible for funding given by the Wellcome Trust for article processing charges.

Publishers are requested to sign up to the requirements by 16 December 2016.

Wiley, SpringerNature, OUP, Royal Society and PLOS have already committed to signing up.

Charity Open Access Fund (COAF) members including Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation and Parkinson's UK will also apply the same open access publications requirements for funded research.
