Theatre, dance and opera collections brought together online

A new guide to subject strengths in our theatre and performance collections is available.

The guide highlights the research potential of our archives and helps identify interesting material in our theatre and performance collections for students in different disciplines.

Drama, dance and opera are made in many different historical contexts and Special Collections has items of great cultural and social significance. As a result our archives are a fascinating and valuable research tool.

Theatre collections

One of Special Collections' greatest strengths is its extensive theatre collections. These include the archives of the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

  • Open the stage management and production files to learn about the staging of past performances.
  • Examine the advertisements in programmes and flyers to observe cultural and social change.
  • Study our Wole Soyinka and African theatre collections to receive unique insights into a complex history.

Dance collections

Our dance collections are available for cultural and social research.

  • The Rudolf Laban Collections reveal the 20th century birth of a new method of choreography.
  • The Phoenix and RJC collections present the creation of multicultural modern dance in Leeds.
