Cataloguing has begun thanks to grant award

Special Collections and Red Ladder Theatre Company were announced as the 2016 winners of the Business Archives Council cataloguing grant for business archives related to the Arts. The BAC Award was launched in 2013 to support an under-represented area of business archives and to complement wider initiatives for archiving the arts.

The Business Archive Council judges recognised that

the Archives of Red Ladder Theatre Company could be not only a strong research resource for theatre and performance (a subject strength within Special Collections at Leeds University Library), but also in the under-represented area of radical theatre. As the company has focused on disadvantaged communities and multiculturalism, and working with living playwrights, it also has the potential to open new avenues of research into the arts and performance in West Yorkshire and beyond.

Cataloguing of this collection has now begun thanks to the BAC award. The collection is currently inaccessible but over the next few months records dating back to 1971 will be catalogued, arranged and re-packaged.  The archive contains company information, stage management files, production files, tour plans, articles, scripts, set drawings, press and publicity materials. This project to catalogue it in depth will make a clear difference, opening it up to Arts researchers and complementing the extensive theatre and performance archives already held in Special Collections.
