Stock moves and building works

The transfer of some subjects' books and journals from the Brotherton Library to the Edward Boyle Library will take place this summer, between Monday 5 June and Friday 25 August.

The transfer will complete the stocking of the Edward Boyle Library, and ultimately provide more space in the Brotherton Library for subjects to be reorganised and spaced out, and for new study facilities to be provided.

The Laidlaw and Health Sciences Libraries will not be affected by these moves, and all core module texts will remain in those libraries.

What is moving where

  • Social Sciences books will move from the Brotherton Library to the Edward Boyle Library Level 12.  This affects the following classmarks:
    - Business Reference
    - Business Economics
    - Economics
    - Education
    - Law
    - Management
    - Politics
    - Social Policy
    - Sociology
    - Universities
  • Social Sciences journals will move to the Edward Boyle Library (Level 8);
  • Science and Engineering journals and less-used (stack classmark) books will return to the Edward Boyle Library Level 8 from Stores;
  • Some less-used Social Sciences books and journals will be moved from the Brotherton Library to Stores;
  • Official Publications, including the EDC, will move from the Brotherton Library to the Edward Boyle Library Level 8;
  • Textiles books will move from the Edward Boyle Library to the Brotherton Library West 2.

The Library will make every effort to minimise disruption and the libraries will remain open. Individual volumes will be unavailable whilst in transit, normally for just 2-3 days but occasionally longer. The Library catalogue will be updated to reflect location changes. All these stock moves and catalogue changes will be completed by the new academic year.0

Brotherton Library maintenance work

Essential maintenance work to the lined ducts under the Brotherton Library will be taking place from 17 July for six weeks.

The Reading Room is going to be very noisy, so, for everyone's wellbeing, study in that area will not be possible during the work. There will be normal access to the shelves and to Special Collections.

Quiet study space will be available in the Health Sciences and Laidlaw libraries throughout the summer.

Keep up to date with what's happening

If you are intending to borrow books or consult journals for the affected subjects, please check in advance in case they are temporarily unavailable. The document below lists which books are moving when, and where disruption is likely.  Display screens in the libraries will also show the current changes.
