Exam time in the Library

Opening hours, finding a study space and support from the Library during exams.

Here's everything you need to know about using the Library during the exam period.

24 hour opening

We’re opening the Laidlaw Library around the clock from Sunday 13 January. When the doors open on Sunday morning at 10am, the library will remain open for the full duration of the exam period, closing at midnight on Friday 25 January.

The Edward Boyle Library will stay open until midnight every day during exams. Check the Library opening times for a full list of all Library opening hours during the exam period.

If you're studying late, you can use Leeds University Union services to get you home safely. The LUU Nightbus costs only £1, and emergency arrangements are in place with Amber Taxis.

Somewhere to study

We are opening up all of our teaching rooms to create as much additional revision space as possible. This includes the teaching rooms on Laidlaw Level 1 and the Edward Boyle conference room on level 7.

Library staff are here to support you so just ask, we know space is at a premium and we can try to help you to find a seat.

Check the IT Computer Cluster availability to see where computers are free. If you don't know where all the clusters are, check the list of clusters or the cluster map for directions.

Revision and exams support

With handy revision and exams advice and tips, there's plenty of support available from Skills@Library available to help get your ready for your exams. We also have one-to-one support for you, should you need it.

We have a thread filled with helpful revision tips on our Twitter account, where we will continue to share helpful hints for you over the exam period.

Looking out for yourself

It's no secret that exams can be stressful and you need to take care of yourself. There are water fountains in all libraries so you can keep yourself hydrated and both the Refectory and The Edit Room in the Edward Boyle Library will have extended opening hours for the exam period so you can keep yourself fed.

The LUU will be holding Leeds Light Cafe in the LUU foyer to ensure that there is a nice relaxing space to take a break. The LUU are also offering a range of activities during exam time, including pet therapy, games nights, meditation and more. For a full list of events, take a look at the LUU website.

We invite all students to use Big White Wall which can be a really helpful tool for managing stress and mental health concerns. it's completely anonymous and offers support for almost any worries you might have during exams.

Looking out for each other

The libraries do get busy during exams and everyone’s a bit stressed. The top three things that students tell us will help at exam time are:

  • be silent in quiet areas and only use the group areas to have conversations
  • clear up any rubbish you create into the recycling bins before you leave
  • don’t hog desks for a long time!

Look after yourself – it’s good to take a screen break, leave for a walk or some food, but if you are gone for more than 30 minutes please clear your desk. And keep your stuff safe - don’t leave any valuables unattended.

Library staff are here to help so if you have any problems using the libraries at exam time please come to the desk and talk to one of us, or use the web chat from 9am-5pm on the library website, where you can also contact us. We’ll do our best to help you.
