These databases are available for use by Leeds staff and students both on and off-site within the terms of the license agreements. Off-site users will need to login using their Leeds username and password.

20th Century Drama

Find full text of over 2,000 plays from the English-speaking world from the 1890s onwards with new content added regularly. This database allows advanced searching to refine your search by theatre company, director, place/date first performed, genre and subject, as well as the standard keyword, title or playwright. It features plays from noted playwrights as well as lesser known dramatists.

AES Electronic Library

This is a full-text database from the AES (Audio Engineering Society - US) and has all the AES papers from the journal, conventions and conferences in PDF form from 1953 to the present. The AES is the only professional society devoted exclusively to audio technology.

Art Full Text

Search for journal articles in Art and Design as well as some aesthetic aspects of cinema. Indexing more than 500 journals as far back as 1984, this resource offers full text of an international array of peer-selected publications - with expanded coverage of Latin American, Canadian, Asian and non-Western art, new artists, contemporary art, exhibition reviews, and feminist criticism. The database is updated daily.

Bibliography of the History of Art

Includes articles from over 1,200 journals, and allows you to search for articles in fine art and history of art. Topics can be searched easily by subject, artist, author, article or journal title, and other elements. It covers European and American visual arts material published between 1975 and 2007.

Black Drama

Black Drama contains the full text of more than 1,700 plays written from the mid-1800s to the present by more than 200 playwrights from North America, English-speaking Africa, the Caribbean, and other African diaspora countries. Many of the works are rare, hard to find, or out of print.

Online texts of plays and critical works published by Bloomsbury, Methuen, Faber & Faber, Arden, Nick Hern and Playwrights Canada Press. The Library’s subscription covers the majority of the titles offered by this resource. You can also use Library Search to find individual titles we subscribe to.

Box of Broadcasts

BoB (Box of Broadcasts) National is a shared online off-air TV and radio recording service for UK higher and further education institutions. It enables you to choose and record any broadcast programme from 60+ TV and radio channels. The recorded programmes are then kept indefinitely and added to a growing media archive (currently at over 1 million programmes), with all content shared by users across all subscribing institutions.

Bridgeman Education

Bridgeman Education is a complete visual resource offering over 1,000,000 digital images of art, history and culture from global museums, galleries, private collections and contemporary artists all copyright cleared for educational use. Due to technical limitations, Bridgeman Education is only available on campus, or through Desktop Anywhere.

Communication & Mass Media Complete

Communication & Mass Media Complete (CMMC) offers full text and cover to cover indexing and abstracts for over 600 journals covering communication, mass media, linguistics, rhetoric, language, logic, and other closely related fields. This also includes over 400 full text journals, selected coverage of more than 170 journals and thousands of author profiles. Coverage dates back to 1900.

Dance Online: Dance in Video, Volume 1

Streamed dance videos from 1974 onwards featuring works and productions by many of the major players in western dance.

Dimensions

Dimensions is the world’s largest linked-research database, covering articles, grants, patents, clinical trials, datasets, policy documents and technical reports. It also provides research metrics. There is a free version open to all, or a subscription version.

You must register for an account with your Leeds email address to get full access, from a computer within the University’s IP range or through the virtual desktop. Once you are registered, you can access the database from off-campus. If you are a student, you can put “student” in the job title field.

Erudit

Erudit gives free access to French-language resources in the social sciences and humanities from the North American region. It indexes journal articles, books and proceedings, theses and dissertations, and research reports.

Handbook of Latin American Studies

Search for details of books, book chapters, conference papers and articles in Latin American studies. The database is multilingual and covers the fields of anthropology, archaeology, genealogy, art, economics, geography, government and politics, international relations, literature, music, philosophy, and sociology. The database is updated weekly with coverage starting from 1936. Physical copies are located in the Brotherton Library.

JSTOR provides access to more than 10 million academic journal articles, books, and primary sources in 75 disciplines including Art and Art History, Performing Arts, Architecture and Music.

Literature Online

Search and find the full text of over 350,000 works of English and American poetry, prose and drama, over 300 full text literature journals and many detailed works of reference and criticism. It also links out to authoritative websites. LION is underpinned by lists which you can browse arranged by author, period, nationality, literary movement, ethnicity and gender. Updated 9-10 times a year.

Naxos Music Library

Search for and listen to over 160,000 works of music, including classical music, jazz, world, folk and Chinese music. Full text notes on the works being played as well as biographical information on composers or artists are also available. This database is updated monthly.

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography

Search for full text biographies of all notable deceased public figures who have influenced British history and culture. Useful for any subject. The database is updated three times a year. The printed volumes of all editions and supplemental volumes are shelved in the Brotherton Library General Reference Collection.

Oxford English Dictionary Online

The OED is the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language across the English-speaking world. As well as giving definitive meanings it also acts a guide to pronunciation, lists variant spellings and provides an etymological analysis, employing over 2.5 million quotations to demonstrate usages. Updated quarterly.

Oxford Music Online

Allows searching of the Oxford Dictionary of Music, Oxford Companion to Music and Grove Music Online. The Oxford Companion to Music offers more than 8,000 articles on composers, performers, conductors, instruments and notation, forms and genres, and individual works. The Oxford Dictionary of Music, 2nd edition (revised 2006), supplements Grove's more extensive articles with content aimed at undergraduates and general users.

Passport

Data and market research reports on consumer markets worldwide. It includes market analysis and statistics, forecasts, information on the top brands and companies in a country or sector, and overviews of the major market factors. Search either by keyword, or by using the headings at the top of the screen to choose the type of information. Updated monthly.

Scopus is a large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature from more than 18,500 journals and quality web sources, with smart tools to track, analyse and visualize research. Coverage starts from 1823.

The Shakespeare Collection

Access and study an extensive collection of authoritative materials supporting literary, textual, historical, and performance studies. Online access to the full-text annotated works from The Arden Shakespeare, general reference data, full text scholarly periodicals, and reprinted criticism, the Gordon Crosse Theatrical Diaries, criticism, reviews, images, and reference. Updated regularly.

Web of Science

Search for journal articles using three databases; Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index. A current awareness service provides citation alerts for newly added journal articles. Each database is updated weekly.
