Requests and recalls

We operate a request and recall system so we can make popular items available to as many customers as possible.

Undergraduates and external members can request up to six items.
Postgraduates and academic staff can request up to ten items.

You can request: Standard loan items including core texts that are out on loan. Items in the Store.
You cannot request: 1-day loans or High Demand Collection items. Non-store items that are available

How to request an item

  • Find it using Search @Library
  • Select "Request it". The button is under the location information
  • Log in
  • Choose the item and submit the form.

We will send a recall email to the customer who has the item if we are asking them to bring it back early. When they return it we will email your University account to tell you that it is ready to collect from the self-pickup area for requested items. In the Edward Boyle and the Health Sciences Library this is in the high demand area; in the Brotherton it is behind the enquiry desk.

You will need your membership card to collect your requested item.

We will keep a requested item for the number of days stated on the email, after which it will be returned to the open shelves, or moved on to the next customer in the queue.

Recalled items

All Standard and core text items are subject to recall at any time, including during vacations. You have at least seven days with an item, even if another customer has requested it.

If another customer requests an item that you have, this will show immediately when you check your Library record. You will also receive a recall email asking you to return the book. You can also check if a book has been requested using the Leeds Uni App.

Please note that we may be asking you to bring it back early, and the new due date will be stated on the email.

If we change the due date of the book we will ask you to return it within three days (unless you fall into one of the categories which allows for a seven day return*). Postal returns will be counted from the postmark date, rather than the date we receive it.
What's the Library address?

If you do not return it by the original or new date, you will start to accrue fines.

If you have any doubts about your ability to return a recalled item on time please contact the Library.

*Categories of borrowers where the seven day return rule applies:

  • Part time students
  • Healthcare, Dentistry and Medicine students
  • Education students
  • Disabled students
  • Research students
  • Lifelong learning
  • External members
  • Staff.
