Some marginal annotations in an early hand have been washed and are now indistinct.


Bindings


Binding of full red goatskin over pasteboard, probably early twentieth-century. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a border and frame comprising a single wide fillet with diagonal lines across the central panel and further decoration with lines of varying lengths at the corners and either side of the panel. The spine has five raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Tacitus - Historiæ. Gold-tooled at the base of the spine is the date: 1497. The other panels are blind-tooled with a border and frame of single fillets with a small fleuron at the outer corners of the frame. The board edges are blind-tooled with a herringbone pattern and the wide turn-ins are blind-tooled with a repeating ornament incorporating scrolls. Watermark on the title page of a scales within a circle surmounted by a staff with a hook. Size: 307 x 208mm. Leaf size: 300 x200mm.

Provenance

Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
