Bindings


Both volumes are bound in full crimson goatskin over pasteboard, late eighteenth- or nineteenth-century. The upper and lower covers are decorated with gold-tooled dentelle borders. At the centre of both upper covers is a gold-tooled coat of arms with three fleurs-de-lys in an oval resting on laurel leaves with a crown above. The spines are divided into six panels with gold-tooled borders of decorated fillets. Gold-tooled in the second panel of volume 1 are the words: Epistolae diversorum philosophori. Gold-tooled in the fourth panel are the place and date: Venetiis 1499. Gold-tooled in the second panel of volume 2 are the words: Episto Basilii Magni. Gold-tooled in the fourth panel are the place and date: Veneti 1499. Gold-tooled at the centre of each remaining panel is a fleur-de-lys surrounded with stylised foliage. The books have gilt edges and the board edges and turn-ins are gold-tooled with a repeating pattern of stylised foliage. The pastedowns are of marbled paper featuring the
spot pattern in brown, black, grey and cream. Volume 2 has a pale blue silk ribbon register. Volume 1 - Size: 213 x 158mm. Leaf size: 205 x 150mm. Volume 2 - Size: 214 x 157mm. Leaf size: 209 x 151mm.

Provenance

Inscription in ink manuscript, now much faded, at the foot of a1r in volume 1: Bernh. Rottendorffi. The book was in the possession of Bernhard Rottendorff, doctor and humanist of Münster.


At the bottom of leaves [*]1r of volume 1 and a1r of volume 2 are small circular stamps in red and black containing crossed anchors inside a shield.


A typed card inserted at the front of volume 1 states: King Louis Philippe's copy, with his arms on the sides.


Note in pencil manuscript on the verso of the front pastedown of volume 1: King Louis Philippe's copy, with his arms.


Small black and white armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown of each volume. The books were most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
