Colophon on F8v reads: Impressum autem Venetijs per magistrum Bernardinu[m] riçium de Nouaria : anno a natiuitate d[omi]ni. M.cccc.lxxxxij. die decimoquinto Februarij : regnante inclyto duce Augustino barbadico.


Woodcut illustrations throughout. Most of the illustrations are from Bernardinus Benalius's 1486 edition (ISTC ij00210000), including two half-page representations of the Expulsion from Paradise and Cain slaying Abel on leaves a3v and a4v respectively, and over 60 small woodcut city views, including repeats. The half-page cut of the Tower of Babel on leaf a6v and the city-views of Genoa, Rome, Verona, and Venice on leaves c3v, f8r, i6v and t2r, are from his 1490 edition (ISTC ij00211000). Rizus also added woodcut borders on leaves a1v and a2r from cuts that had appeared earlier that same year in the Italian Legenda Aurea printed by Bonellis (ISTC ij00179000), and the frontispiece of Creation on leaf a1v and a small woodcut of Noah's ark on leaf a5v from the Bible in Italian printed by Malermi in 1490 (ISTC ib00644000).

Occasional marginal annotations in black ink manuscript, late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century.


Very occasional crude manicules in red and black pencil manuscript.


In pencil manuscript, twentieth-century, on the back pastedown are a price and date: 25-0-0 - 8/11/28.


The two shields at the bottom of the woodcut borders on a1v and a2r have been coloured in black and yellow.


Details in some of the larger woodcuts have been coloured yellow.


In some copies there are errors in foliation, with leaves 16 and 185 numbered 15 and 85 respectively. In this copy, the foliation is correct.


Some worm damage.


Bindings


Nineteenth-century binding of half calf and brown paper over pasteboard. The spine has three raised bands and gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Jacobus Philippus Supplementum chronicarum. Gold-tooled at the base of the spine are the place and date: Venice 1492. Above is the Brotherton Collection stamp in gold. Written in black ink manuscript on the tail-edge are the letters: Sv cro. There is some damage to the head of the spine. Size: 320 x 225mm. Leaf size: 312 x 214mm.

Provenance

Coloured armorial bookplate of Lord Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired after 17 June 1929 when Sir Edward Allen Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
