Description

Literary Archive of Melvyn Bragg, includes drafts, notes and proof copies of his published works, plays, playscripts, screenplays and filming projects, articles particularly for The Times and 'Punch' Magazine, and material reflecting his various broadcasting endeavours at Thames TV, Border TV, Granada, ITV, Channel 4 and the BBC, including limited material relating to the South Bank Show.


Bragg's archive also includes both a personal and business correspondence sequence. The personal correspondence reflects various important personal and professional relationships with leading figures of the New Labour era including Tony Blair and Peter Mandleson, a wide range of literary and cultural figures of global repute including Seamus Heaney, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ken Russell, and significant figures from the broadcasting media including Greg Dyke and Michael Grade.

Biography or history

Writer, broadcaster and parliamentarian, the Rt Hon Lord Melvyn Bragg was born in Wigton in Cumbria in 1939. After joining the BBC as a general trainee in 1962, Bragg went on to become a pre-eminent figure in arts broadcasting in Britain from the late 1960s on, editing, producing and presenting a wealth of pioneering, award-winning television and radio programmes across the cultural spectrum. Alongside his work in broadcasting, Melvyn Bragg has sustained a parallel career as a writer. He is the author of several screenplays, many works of non-fiction and more than a dozen novels. Profile: Lord Bragg of Wigton (born 1939)

A playwright, biographer and novelist, Oxford-educated Melvyn Bragg is best known for his 50-some years as an educational broadcaster. He also works with charities and cultural organisations, and is a Labour life peer. In 2009 he gave Leeds University Library his massive literary archive.
