Bindings


Twentieth-century binding of full red goatskin by Vignal. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a border and frame of fillets with a small leaf-shaped ornament at each corner. In the centre is an elaborate lozenge-shaped design of stylised foliage. The turn-ins are also blind-tooled with an intricate pattern of scrolls. The spine has five raised bands and each of the six panels is blind-tooled with double fillets with a small leaf-shaped ornament at each corner. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Aristoteles - Physica - Burlei Commentaria. Watermark on the title page, possibly of a sceptre. Size: 325 x 218mm. Leaf size: 319 x 211mm.

Provenance

Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
