Bindings

Eighteenth-century binding of half calf and brown paper over pasteboard. The calfskin and paper have been surface-coated and sprinkled with black ink and the paper on both the upper and lower covers is worn and has suffered losses. The spine has five raised bands. In the second panel is a red pared leather lettering piece on which are tooled, in black, the words: S. Bernardi et Gilberti Sermones in Cantica. Written in black ink manuscript directly onto the spine in the third panel is the date: 1497. In the fourth panel are the remains of a pale green leather pared lettering piece with a faded letter B in ink manuscript. The leaf edges are sprinkled with blue ink. Watermarks on the flyleaves of Pro Patria and J. Honig & Zoon. Size: 282 x 213mm. Leaf size: 275 x 200mm.

Provenance

Cutting from a French sale catalogue on the front pastedown.
