Bindings
Late fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century German binding of full blind-stamped pigskin over bevelled wooden boards. The upper and lower boards are decorated with a border and frame of triple fillets. The outer frame contains a repeated pattern of stylised foliage inside which are depictions of the virtues Justicia, Charitas, Fides, Paciencia, Fortituto and Spes. There are two decorated metal clasps attached with nails to the upper and lower covers, with the catch on the upper cover. The leather on the clasps has been restored. The spine has four raised bands with fillets to either side of each. In the first panel are words written in ink manuscript, now indistinct. Attached to the second panel is a pared red leather lettering piece on which are gold-tooled the words: Sti Bonaventure Tractatus Colonie Per Joh. Coelhoff. 1486. Size: 301 x 217mm. Leaf size: 283 x 200mm.
Provenance
Armorial bookplate of Iohannes Valentinus Hoeglein on the front pastedown.
