Bindings

Late fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century German binding of full calf over wooden boards. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a border, frames and scrolls containing gothic inscriptions. The spine has four raised bands. In the first panel is a paper lettering piece, pasted over an older label, with writing in black ink manuscript: 1479. Nüremb. Varia. Creusn. The pastedowns are made from pieces of rubricated vellum manuscript, thirteenth-century, and paper with ink manuscript, fifteenth- and sixteenth-century. Nailed to the boards are two decorated clasps with the catch on the upper board. The leather straps are original and are blind-tooled with the same gothic inscription as the covers. The remains of nails and holes in the upper and lower covers suggest that metal furniture and cornerpieces were once attached to the book. There is some worm damage to both the upper and lower covers and the leaf edges are slightly cockled. Size: 306 x 224mm. Leaf size: 296 x 216mm.

Bound with two other publications. Volume contents: 1. Caracciolo, R: Sermones de Timore Diuinorum Judicorum et de morte, 1479. -- 2. Collecta Magistralia, 1479. -- 3. N. von Dinkelsbühl, Concordancia in Passionem Dominicam, 1480.

Provenance

The purple library stamps at the base of leaves [1] and [36] have been erased.

Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
