Bindings

Early sixteenth-century roll binding of full dark brown calf over wooden boards, rebacked. Both the upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a frame containing stylised foliage, birds and animals and a central panel with a diagonal pattern of lozenges. The new spine has four raised bands with blind-tooled double fillets to either side of each. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: De casibus conscientise. Gold-tooled beneath the title, in error, is the name: S. Ambrose. Gold-tooled in the bottom panel are the place and date: Nuremburg 1498. There are the remains of two metal clasps on the upper and lower boards. The item contains three loose leaves of printed text, two of St. Ambrose and one partly printed in red, previously used as pastedowns. These fragments bear the autograph of John Cooke, sixteenth- or seventeenth-century, and various marginal annotations. A loss to the upper cover has been replaced with brown leather and the corners have been mended. Size: 320 x
230mm. Leaf size: 303 x 212mm.

Provenance

Written on the title page in black ink manuscript, sixteenth- or seventeenth-century: Ex. lib. Harf. Pr. This is written in the same hand as the autograph of John Cooke which appears on the loose leaves kept with the item and previously used as pastedowns.

Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
