Description

The collection contains material documenting Hanmer's work as an activist, academic and researcher on domestic violence, including women's experiences of domestic violence, agencies responding to domestic violence, policing domestic violence repeat victimisation and crime prevention. Women's studies postgraduate courses at Bradford includes course content, administrative and financial records and reference material compiled for students..The collection is divided into five series, which document Hanmer’s work and include associated material. Series A documents: Bradford University Women’s Studies Unit. WRRC, Women's Research and Resources Centre in periodicals. The collection reflects both Hanmer's work organising various courses, and of the Research Unit associated with her academic work, which conducted various research projects, including ‘Women, Violence and Crime Prevention’ (1987 – 1990), and ‘A research and policy report on women’s experiences of violence and agency
responses’ (1993), amongst others. Research projects were conducted both independently, by the Unit, and in association with other bodies, including the Leeds Inter Agency Project (LIAP), and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The Unit also organised workshops, seminar series and conferences, including the Women Overcoming Violence and Abuse (WOVA) conference, held in Brighton in 1996 The collection contains material relating to organisation of various women's studies courses, including series covering course content, administrative and financial records and reference material compiled for students. Biography or history

Jalna Hanmer, feminist activist, academic and researcher was born in 1931, and gained a BA in Sociology and Social Institutions at the University of California, Berkley, in 1956. She moved to the UK in 1959, working on a variety of social research projects.
