This handlist records over 200 letters and other documents mainly from Aylmer Maude (1858-1938), English translator, biographer and publicist of Tolstoy, to George Herbert Perris (1866-1920) and to Charles F Cazenove, who acted as Maude's literary agents and advisers. The letters mainly concern translations from Tolstoy and the affairs of the 'Resurrection Fund'. It should be stressed, however, that the notes on the contents of individual letters are only indicative of what seems to be the main purport of each; the notes are not exhaustive.
It appears that many of these letters and postcards were addressed to Perris and Cazenove at the Literary Agency of London, with which both were connected. The Agency occupied various premises in Henrietta Street, London WC. Cazenove is not always identified with his initials, but Charles F Cazenove has been assumed silently where these are lacking. Of the other correspondents, Miss Huntsman was an employee of the Agency and 'M Jackson' (item 203) was probably a secretary or clerk at Messrs Aylmer Maude, Pash & Co.
The English forms of Russian names used here are a compromise between traditional English usage (e.g. Tolstoy), Maude's own versions (e.g. Tchertkoff) and modern transliterations. The index includes the principal alternative forms where these are widely separated by the alphabet.
These papers were offered as lot 324 at Sotheby's sale on 29th October 1974, but were not sold. The Library acquired them by private treaty in the following January. We are grateful to Mr M J de K Holman of the Department of Russian Studies in the University for his sustained interest in the collection and his help on various points.

Biography or history
Aylmer Maude was educated at Christ's Hospital, London, from 1868 to 1874, and then at the Lyceum in Moscow, 1874 to 1876. From 1877 to 1880 he worked as a tutor in Moscow, before becoming business manager of the Russian Carpet Company and subsequently its director in 1880 - a post he held until his return to England in 1897. He went back to Russia, 1918-1919, as a lecturer for the Universities' Committee of the YMCA. He published many translations of, and works about, Tolstoy.
