Description
Anonymous manuscript notes on various aspects of forensic medicine, from the front of the volume [pp.1-43v], and notes entitled 'Insanity' from the back of the volume [pp.44-52v]. These notes have previously been attributed to Berkeley G.A. Moynihan (1865-1936), but their provenance is unclear.
The notes mainly cover the topic of toxicology, and describe the symptoms of poisoning by different substances.
There are also notes on identifying other causes of death, such as infanticide, asphyxia, lightening, burns & scalds, starvation, syncope, sudden death, and general signs of death.
The notes relating to the topic of insanity from the back of the volume include a reference to the M'Naghten Rule [or McNaughten] of 1843, which relates to a defense of insanity in a criminal case [p.48v].
The verso of p.37 and recto of p.38 are blank.
