Features

Marginal annotations in an early hand on numbered leaf CLXII have been washed and are now indistinct.


Written in black ink manuscript on the recto of the first front flyleaf is a date: 22 October 1831.


Various notes in pencil manuscript, nineteenth- and twentieth-century, on the verso of the front free endpaper and the recto of the first front flyleaf giving details of the edition.


Several leaves, including numbered leaves LXIIII, LXXXIII and LXXXVIII and leaf [2] at the end have been mounted.


The paper at the head-edge of several leaves has been replaced.


Bindings


Late eighteenth- or early nineteenth-century binding of full long-grained red goatskin over thick pasteboard by C. Hering whose label appears on the upper left of the verso of the front free endpaper. Both the upper and lower covers are decorated with a wide border of gold-tooled dentelle ornamentation between double fillets. The spine has three raised bands and gold-tooled ornamentation in the first and fourth panels. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Horatii Opera cum comment: Landini. Gold-tooled in the third panel are the words: Florentiæ per Antonium Miscominum MCCCCLXXXII. The book has red goatskin doublures gold-tooled with three sets of double fillets forming a border and frames with dentelle ornamentation and a central panel of thirteen blind-tooled diagonal double fillets with a circle at each intersection. The front and back free endpapers opposite the doublures are coloured red. The board edges are gold-tooled with a single fillet and fleurons, with rows of
diagonal hatching at the corners. The book has gilt edges and a green silk ribbon register. Size: 290 x 215mm. Leaf size: 280 x 205mm.

Provenance

Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front free endpaper. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
