Bindings


Binding of full red-brown goatskin over pasteboard. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a design of double fillets forming a border and frames which are filled with repeating patterns of stylised foliage. The central panel is decorated with a blind-tooled fleuron at each corner and another in the centre. The spine has five slightly raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel is the name: Laetvs. Gold-tooled in the third panel are the words: Romanae historiae compendivm. The other panels are decorated with blind-tooled fleurons between lines of stylised foliage. The turn-ins and board edges are also blind-tooled with stylised foliage. The leaf edges are coloured red and the book has a red silk ribbon register. Size: 209 x 142mm. Leaf size: 200 x 135mm.

On the back pastedown in pencil manuscript are a price and date: 12-10-0 - 8/11/28.


Small blue and white armorial bookplate of Lord Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired after 17 June 1929 when Sir Edward Allen Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
