Description

These papers principally illuminate the experiences of the donor John Manwaring Baines, his parents and children. There is material on pre-war holidays, contemporary accounts by J M Baines of his service on the Second World War when he rose to the rank of major in the Royal Artillery, his draft autobiography, 'Curator Unmasked' and various series of letters especially to and from his parents and from his son, the artist R J M Baines, from the 1930s-1950s.

There is some material relating to other families connected with the Baines by marriage, but one particularly cohesive collection of letters relating to John Lloyd Williams and his service in the First World War which arrived with this Collection, has been treated as a separate manuscript (Special Collections MS 719,. handlist 70).

The relationship to Mr J M Baines of those principally referred to in the papers is set out in an appendix. The relationship is also mentioned in some of the entries in the catalogue.

Biography or history

Mr Baines graduated B Sc. in the University of Leeds in 1931 and his father, Frederick Talbot Baines, was for many years clerk to the Senate of the University. The Baines' family played a prominent part in local affairs in Leeds in the late 18th and 19th centuries, and at one time were the owners of the 'Leeds Mercury'.

Provenance

Gift of Mr J. M. Baines formerly curator of the Hastings Museum in February 1985.
