Description

These papers mainly concern the renewal of the Broadcloth Acts in 1733 and 1741. They were given to the Library in 1922 by Mr Clarke-Thornhill. With one exception, they are listed here in chronological order, as far as that can be established. The final item, the earliest, did not originally belong with the rest of the collection, although it comes from the Calverley family. Each item consists of a single sheet.

Item 36 is a receipt for money paid to John Maynard by Henry Calverley, 19 May 1639. The other items are of the period c.1730-c.1768. Each document (except no. 36) is accompanied by up to 3 copies of a typed transcript. There are also 20 sheets of explanatory material.

Biography or history

The papers mainly concern the renewal of the Broadcloth Acts in 1733 and 1741. Sir Walter Calverley (ca.1670-1749), who had been created a baronet in 1711, was involved in the presentation to Parliament of a petition advocating a better observance of the Cloth Acts. The petition, framed as a bill, was passed by the House of Commons, but rejected in the Lords.

System of arrangement

The MS 301 catalogue is based on an historic inventory, created in 1972. The arrangement of material does not necessarily represent the original order of the archive and it is considered partly processed by an archivist. When making requests to consult, please be aware that there may be discrepancies between description and physical arrangement. The retrievable unit for this collection is file level.
