Bindings


Binding of dark brown calf over wooden boards, restored. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a border and frame of triple fillets containing a repeating pattern of stylised foliage. The central panel is decorated with blind-tooled tracery containing fleurons. The spine has three raised bands and is decorated wtih blind-tooled ornamentation. The book is fastened with a single decorated metal clasp, the catch on the upper board and the strap restored. Written in black ink manuscript on the head-edge: Ma[m]otrectus. Losses to the head and tail of the spine and the lower cover have been replaced. Size: 305 x 218mm. Leaf size: 293 x 204mm.

Provenance

The remains of a purple oval library stamp, rubbed out and now indistinct, are visible at the base of the first leaf of the table and on the final printed leaf (v6r) beneath the colophon.


Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
